Awake - Son Mài Frosted Leaf Blood Moon, Storm, Lagoon
When AWAKE unveiled its Frosted Leaf technique in 2025, the response from collectors was immediate and unanimous. The dial work was unlike anything else in contemporary watchmaking, a hypnotic interplay of lacquer, silver leaf, and light that transformed each timepiece into a one-off work of art. One year and two industry awards later, the French brand returns with three new creations that push the technique even further.
Introducing Blood Moon, Storm, and Lagoon—a trio of 38 mm timepieces inspired by rare natural phenomena
Three Phenomena, Three Personalities
Each dial captures a fleeting moment of nature and seals it in lacquer for eternity.
Blood Moon channels the total lunar eclipse—that rare celestial event when the moon slips into Earth's shadow and emerges in deep, unreal crimson. Black and red pigments clash and complement across the dial, creating a visual depth that shifts between darkness and an almost supernatural glow.
Storm renders the split-second violence of lightning. Black and orange hues crackle across the surface, evoking the uneasy beauty of a flash that illuminates everything before vanishing. It is the most electric of the three—bold, unpredictable, and impossible to ignore.
Lagoon dives into the translucent, ever-shifting blues and greens of secluded waters. Light passes through layers of lacquer, pigment, and silver leaf to produce an optical effect reminiscent of sun through shallow sea. What appears simple at first glance reveals hidden complexity the longer you look.
The Craft: 15 Hours, One Dial
The dials are produced using Sơn Mài, an ancient Vietnamese lacquer tradition that demands years of apprenticeship. The process begins with sap harvested at dawn from the Rhus verniciflua tree—just 200 ml per tree, per year. AWAKE's Master Lacquerers then build a "millefeuille" of pure lacquer, natural pigments, and pure silver leaves, sanding and polishing each layer by hand. The final sanding is performed by the workshop's most experienced craftsman, using only his fingertips, to slowly reveal the reliefs and patterns that make every dial unique.
The result is a surface no machine could replicate: organic, alive with metallic flashes, and possessed of a mirror-like depth that seems to extend far below the crystal.
Beyond the dials, the collection introduces a refined 38 mm stainless steel case with thinner, more elegant proportions. The concave polished bezel, slightly convex sapphire crystal, and rounded lugs blend 1960s sensibility with modern finishing. Water resistance is now rated to 10 ATM, thanks to a screw-down crown adorned with AWAKE's new artisanal coat of arms.
