CARL SUCHY & SÖHNE

Founded in 1822 by Austrian watchmaker Carl Suchy, the family enterprise soon became the most important watchmaking company of the Habsburg Monarchy, catering to the likes of Emperor Franz Joseph I, Empress Sisi and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.

200 years ago, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, there was only one address for luxury watches: Carl Suchy & Söhne. The watchmaker and accredited purveyor to the court stood for perfect quality, precision, and timeless elegance. Carl Suchy & Söhne’s products, which were produced in their workshops in Vienna and Prague, as well as in a pocket watch factory in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, were sold internationally. Aristocrats, artists, industrials, and even Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph I, were amongst their customers.

With the demise of the Habsburg Empire, the official “Watch Purveyor to the Royal and Imperial Court“ disappeared. In 2017, Austria’s imperial luxury watch was revived. Now, we are celebrating the comeback of this exclusive brand. Honoring its legacy, the brand still combines Viennese elegance with highest Swiss watchmaking skills.

Their beginnings

Carl Suchy, born in Prague in 1796, took a life-changing decision early in life: he became a watch-making apprentice. After seven years in Germany, Suchy returned to Prague and opened up a clock manufacturer in 1822. His goal of associating his passion for precision and design with his name was achieved with the help of his four sons. With their entry into the business, Carl Suchy & Söhne soon became the most important watchmaker of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The oldest son Carl Suchy Junior established a pocket watch factory in the Swiss Watch Valley “La Chaux-de-Fonds,” while his younger brother Hans opened a store in the historical center of Vienna. Suchy watches became desired objects even outside of Austria’s borders, delighting visitors and the press at world fairs such as Paris, and became essential accessories at royal courts, aristocratic estates, and the salons of Austria’s intellectual elite. Carl Suchy & Söhne was firmly positioned as Austria’s leading watchmaker before an involuntary creative break that started around 1914.

In 2016 Carl Suchy & Söhne was reestablished – the only luxury watch brand that combines Viennese elegance and Swiss precision.
