RESSENCE
Founded in 2010, Ressence is a unique horological start-up creating innovative mechanical fine-watches. Ressence represents an independent way of thinking about fine watchmaking - no less expertly hand-crafted, but with an industrial design philosophy that seeks to be progressive with a clear, graphic aesthetic that is decidedly 21st century.
Benoît Mintiens, the founder and creative mind, is an industrial designer who already had a portfolio of designs to his credit - high-speed trains, aircraft cabins, medical devices, leather goods and even hunting guns before he ever designed a watch.
To realise the innovative ideas behind a Ressence watch requires a superlative attention to detail and craftsmanship. We work with a dedicated atelier in Switzerland - the benchmark of excellence - to produce our watches.
Excellence is an imperative as a Ressence is the result of years of research and development. Nearly all of the components that go to make one of their watches, from the tiniest of cogs to the most complex 3D shaped bridges, are indeed custom made for us.
Simplicity
The focus of Ressence is on bold watchmaking and their belief in the essence of things. They aim to create what is plain and simple, yet not without personality. In the homes of many collectors, watches spend most of their time locked up in a safe, but Ressence pushes against this and designs their watches to be a daily companion. They are light, tactile, with soft rounded shapes that make them useful on the wrist, not in a safe.
The logo of Ressence, an outstretched hand, represents how a a Ressence is meant to an accomplice. It is a part of the wearer; it blends with the wearer. The logo is also a gentle nod to their home city, the historic international port of Antwerp.
Ressence's starting point is the deconstruction of the traditional watch in order to express Time in the purest possible way. Their original concept, summed up by their motto #BEYONDHANDS, is to replace the conventional horological hands with rotating discs for an intuitive reading of the Time.
Designed in Belgium, and made in Switzerland, all Ressence watches share the same inimitable DNA. Their sub-dials continually revolve, as does the main disc into which they are set - like moons in orbit around a planet.
Why oil? What makes Ressence TYPE3 so unique among oil-filled watches?
